Structure Fire On Gordy Road
Monday, July 31, 2006

On a very busy July 30th the LFD began answering alarms just after midnight. The day was capped off with a working structure fire on Gordy Road. At approx. 1207 hours Laurel, Delmar and Gumboro were alerted for a chicken house fire. Chief Mark Sheridan arrived on scene to find heavy smoke coming from the east end. Engine 81-2 arrived under the direction of Asst. Chief Brittingham and was advised to take interior operations. Firefighters advanced into the structure knocking down visible fire, but heavy heat conditions were still present. E/T 74-2 and E/T 81-5 supplied E-2. Additional Delmar and Gumboro units arrived and assisted on a trench cut in the roof area to stop further extension, and assist interior operations. Due to high tempetures and a heat advisory in effect in our area; Sharptown and Blades were alerted to assist for additional manpower. They assisted in overhaul and relieving crews on scene. Chief Sheridan placed the incident under control at 1251 hours.

The chicken house had been converted to a garage and shop area with concrete flooring, which stored a boat, ATV?s, racing equipment, tires, and numerous types of flammables. This determined the heavy fire load which created high heat conditions. The cause is being investigated by DSFM. Last 81 units were back in service at 1445 hours.

Departments on scene: 81, 74, 79, 71, 14, SCEMS, Special thanks to the Hebron FD (Sta. 5) for standing by for the duration of the incident in Laurel.
